LO4 - Work I have created

Print based media unit
Unit 14 - Producing a print based media product
For this unit I had decided to produce a magazine centered around video games as I knew I enjoyed writing reviews of games and films, but felt I knew more about games. I had looked around several different gaming magazines and saw the conventions that were present in them and tried to show these in my magazine as well.

Photography unit
Unit 31 - Photography for media products
For this unit I wanted to show the contrast in the city of Sheffield, be that urban to rural or old to new
I highlighted this contrast by taking colour away from certain parts of the photo while leaving it present in the others. I feel I succeeded in this goal.

Media product analysis unit
Unit 1 - Analysing media products and audiences
In this unit I was tasked with analysing the products and audiences of two different film organisations, Warp Films and 20th Century Fox. I did this through 5 vlogs in which I focus on different aspects of each company.

Media job roles unit
Unit 22 - Job roles in the media industry
In this unit I was asked to choose certain job roles in a  specific aspect of media, I chose film production. i had to find out what responsibilities different roles held and how someone could get themselves into that role.
Games unit

Unit 60 - Games industry
In this unit I and my partner for this unit had to plan a game to pitch to professional game developers, Sumo Digital. Myself and my partner planned and pitched and idea we called 'Mortalis'
which was a zombie survival game which incorporated an open world level design and a full story and multiplayer component. I was responsible for designing some of the concept art we included in the pitch to Sumo Digital and also establishing and speaking about our target audience.

Unit 34 - Web Authoring and design
In this unit I was asked to design a website for use by a wooden toy kit company based in Sheffield called Small Machines.

Unit 35 - Social Media product
In this unit I was asked to create an idea for a social media website or app, the idea I came up with was Grapevine which was a social media site that focuses mostly around news stories that are circulating.

Unit 46 - Audio visual promo
In this unit my filming team encountered many issues such as, varied availability of the filming location and availability at different times of day. We also had several actors with substantial roles pull out of filming. so we were forced to edit our own individual trailers with what footage we already had.

Locations -
For my photography unit I had to go and take pictures in the city centre, he places I went to were:

  • The Peace Gardens
  • St Pauls Tower
  • The Showroom cinema
  • The lyceum theatre
  • The Cathedral

LO2 - Task 3 - Evaluation of resources

After UTC I would be interested in perusing a path in journalism. This leaves me with several options, firstly I could apply to the digital journalist apprenticeship at BBC Radio Sheffield

Access to equipment -
UTC Sheffield has given me access to all manner of equipment including Apple Mac's, Cameras and Computers in order to work on my units. I have also worked with camera equipment such as tripods and I have worked with professional editing software such as Adobe Premiere, Audition, Indesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. I also had a number of individuals ready to give me assistance if I required it on any of the units I have done while studying at UTC Sheffield.

 Contacts -
In my time at UTC Sheffield I have had opportunities to develop several contacts in the media industry including 'Sheffield Live!' an independent T.V and Radio producer based in Sheffield.
Also I have pitched a game to 'Sumo Digital' who are a games developer in Sheffield who have most recently worked on LittleBigPlanet 3. There is also a Film festival in Sheffield called 'Doc Fest' which is a world renowned Documentry festival. I could volunteer at this festival and this would give me valuable experience and something to put on my CV.

Networking opportunities -
Sheffield has many events that are run regularly every year. The most prominent of these festivals is Doc Fest which allows people to volunteer and work as door attendants to showings and other things like this. Volunteering at Doc fest would also allow me to form contacts with various companies.

Opportunities to showcase my work -
I have had several opportunities to showcase my work to potential employers such as when I pitched an idea for a game to Sumo Digital as part of a team. and Also when I pitched pieces of graphic design to the owner of a professional graphic design company.

SWOT Analysis (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats) -
I feel that one of my biggest strengths is my ability to communicate effectively with other people. Another strength is that I am able to work well bot with others and independently.
I feel that my biggest weakness is my Time management as I often spend too much or too litle time on a single task. Some opportunities available to me inlude apprenticships that I could apply for. I could also look for and apply for a job (Part time/Full time). I see no immediate threas that could prevent me from achieving these goals.

LO2 - Be able to evaluate own personal qualities

Personal characteristics -
  • Able to work independently or collaboratively to resolve problems
  • Friendly, outgoing and positive personality
  • Excellent articulate communication skills
  • Familiar with all forms of media
  • Can establish, rapport and develop strong relationships
Skills -
Over the last two years I have both acquired new skills and developed pre existing ones such as: Photography, editing both images and videos in professional production software such as Adobe Photoshop, Premiere, Audition and Indesign.I have also had a chance at writing things such as reviews for a video game magazine,I feel this is what I am best at, and reports regarding anything from a company to individual products. I have also participated in the production of a horror film trailer called desolation.I worked as part of a team to plan and pitch a game called 'Mortalis' to Sumo Digital, This involved coming up with features and mechanics for the game and also producing concept art. I also made a magazine called Digicritic in which I wrote two reviews for the games Metal gear Solid 5 and The Witcher 3 and also wrote about my thoughts on some games that are yet to release.
